This is part one of a five-part series on Beliefs.
When you begin getting creative with the Law of Attraction and creating your own vibration, you’re going to have to take a good look at your belief system. Specifically, you’re going to have to discover and clear any limiting beliefs that may stand in your way of creating the vibration of your choosing, and you’re going to have to create some new beliefs that support your new vibration.
Over the course of the next several posts, I’ll be talking about what limiting beliefs are, how to discover limiting beliefs, how to clear limiting beliefs and how to create new more empowering beliefs, but first, to give you a greater understanding of the rest of the ideas I will be presenting, let me share a little about the role of your belief system and how it was formed in the first place.
First, let’s talk a bit about the role our belief system plays (especially as it relates to the Law of Attraction):
Not only does your belief system add to your overall vibration, having a huge effect on what you attract into your life, but even more importantly, once your belief system is formed, it becomes the filtering system you use to view and navigate through everything that shows up in your life.
As people, circumstances, situations, and even material objects show up in your life, your belief system sifts through them and filters how they appear to you by:
(a) finding a perfect match to your current beliefs and bringing it to your awareness
(b) distorting an imperfect match to make it appear as though it is a perfect match to your current beliefs and bringing the distorted version to your awareness
(c) disregarding anything that doesn’t match your current beliefs as if it never existed
Notice that everything that shows up may not even come into your awareness. According to information from The Biology of Belief by Dr. Bruce Lipton,
“the subconscious mind can process 20 million bits of information per second while the conscious mind can only process 40 bits of information per second.”
That’s a lot of information that your conscious mind is never even being made aware of!
Also notice that your belief system is always looking to match your current beliefs rather than create new ones… and this is because your belief system can only bring to your awareness those things that match with the beliefs you already hold to be true.
This is the just the way this filter works. It’s essentially more of a gatekeeper, “Are you on the list? Let me check. Nope, don’t see your name on the list. Beat it!”
This may take a minute to get used to as most of us weren’t taught this way, but this is the way it works:
What you believe isn’t based on what you notice, but rather, what you notice is based on what you believe.
So, how did you develop your belief system (your filter system) in the first place?
Essentially, we come into this world with this operating system (our subconscious mind) that runs our bodies; stores and determines all of our likes and dislikes; stores all of our emotions, stores our hopes and our fears; and a whole lot more… and as we begin to more fully develop this operating system, we begin to use it as as the lens and the filter that we view the world through.
Since we’re all becoming so computer and internet savvy, I like to use the analogy of the subconscious mind as a computer and we’re using this computer to surf the great World Wide Web…
From birth through about the age of seven, we’re out there surfing the internet, clicking on this link, clicking on that link, watching videos, reading blogs, reading posts on facebook… just taking it all in and, at the same time, adding it to our operating system.
And let me remind you that we’re doing all of this from the limited understanding of a very young age, thus all of this information we run across and take in is open to an enormous amount of misunderstanding and misinterpretation (I’m sure you can already begin to see a bit of a problem here)… but if that weren’t enough… during this time, we’re also operating with absolutely no anti-virus program at all… meaning that everything we run across (misunderstandings and misinterpretations and all) gets downloaded into our operating system as truth to us… everything.
Then, around the age of 7, we begin adding just a bit of anti-virus protection. And while it’s helpful to have somewhat of a filter, it isn’t nearly enough to secure us from all of the information that is still coming in. We’re still downloading new information and we’re also downloading more and more evidence to support the beliefs we have already created during those earlier years when we had no anti virus protection.
And then, by the time we reach the age of 12 or so, we secure a more reliable anti-virus program, which helps filter out any new and undesirable information that may try to enter the system. But, listen to this next part… it also filters out any desirable information that may be trying to enter the system… if it doesn’t match up with the belief system that has already been established.
For the most part, all of the beliefs that were formed up until that time will become our operating system that we use as a lens and a filter to navigate throughout the rest of our lives.
If we’re fortunate, the majority of our programming will be life affirming and beneficial, but always… there are going to be some limiting beliefs that have slipped through and become a part of our unique belief system.
This is normally a big ‘aha’ moment for those who have been wondering why they keep repeating the same choices and patterns that don’t work… over and over. It’s your operating system! You’re programmed to do so through your belief system! You believe it has to be a certain way, so no matter what actually shows us for you, your filtering system will only show you the options that match what you believe to be true.
Fortunately, just as you took those beliefs on, albeit many of them before you were even aware you were taking them on, you also have the ability to reprogram your beliefs into beliefs of your own choosing and thereby create a new filtering system for yourself.
I’ve said it before and I will say it many times again…
“A belief is only an idea one has come to accept as the truth“…
and when you cease to accept a limiting belief as truth, it can no longer be a part of your belief system.
