As we grow older, our collagen production slows down. Not only that, but the collagen that we do have starts to break down as well.
One of the places this can be most apparent is in our lips. All of our soft tissues of our body are made primarily of collagen and our lips get much of their fullness and shape from collagen. And when our collagen starts to slow down and break down, our lips can begin to lose their fullness, and they can also begin to change shape.
I know mine have!
Over the past couple of years, I’ve lost much of the definition along the borders of my lips, especially the top one. I’ve probably also lost a bit of the plumpness, although this isn’t nearly as noticeable to me as the missing definition along the borders.
I used to be able to just throw on some lip gloss and be out the door, but now, I have to add a lip liner with my gloss just to keep my lips from looking one dimensional.
There’s a simple solution: Using a filler such as Restalyne. And quite truthfully, I will do this in the very near future.
But, until that time, I am always open to trying out products that can help even a little bit.
And this is why I am delighted that I had the opportunity to try out MaxiLip Lip Plumper by Vivant Skincare.
About the Brand:
First, I want to share a little the company, Vivant Skin Care.
There are so many skin care companies out there these days, some of them making some pretty huge claims as to what their products can do. So, when I’m looking at a product that makes big claims, I also like to take a look at the company behind it.
And, in this case… the company stands up… big time!
Vivant Skin Care was founded in 1990 by the late Dr. James E. Fulton, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., co-developer of Retin-A®, and his wife Sara Fulton. Vivant Skin Care is a clinical skin care line rooted in Dr. Fulton’s patented vitamin A therapies.
About the Product:
MaxiLip Lip Plumper is formulated to moisturize and impart fuller, firmer, smoother, and more defined lips. The product was a finalist in the 2013 CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) Awards in the ‘Lip Treatment’ Category.
MaxiLip users can expect to experience up to a 40% increase in volume, plus a significant reduction of surface folds, and a huge boost in hydration and softness.
The Key Ingredients of MaxiLip work synergistically as well as individually to provide immediate results as well as cumulative results.
Key Ingredients: Benzyl Nicotinate (increases blood flow), Perfluorocarbons (increases oxygen levels in the skin) and Oligopeptides (stimulates collagen production and improves lip contour) Petrolatum: (prevents the skin’s natural moisture from evaporating)
It’s simple to use, nothing complicated here…
Directions for use:
Apply to lips twice a day (a.m. and p.m.). Mild redness and warm tingling sensation will occur. This is not an allergic reaction. After prolonged use, the tingling sensation will disappear entirely. This does not mean that the product has stopped working.
My Thoughts and Experience:
I have to tell you, while I love to try out the products, I didn’t have a lot of belief in lip plumpers before trying this product.
The first time I tried a lip plumper was back in the early 2000’s. A friend was getting married and it was a big to-do amongst many of our mutual friends, to the point where some were getting lip fillers and other cosmetic enhancements before the wedding day came around.
As the day grew closer, I decided I had to jump in and do something! I did a little research and found that there was a product that was supposed to plump your lips and give you a bee sting look… perfect!
Well, let’s just say that I didn’t walk around that wedding reception with anything more than shiny glossy lips that tasted a bit like cinnamon. I loved the gloss, but alas for me, there was no bee stung effect.
I think I have tried one or two additional lip plumpers since that time, and again, with their active ingredient being cinnamon, they left me with glossy cinnamon flavored lips, but no plumping.
So, when I found that I had the opportunity to review this lip plumper that is nothing like those I have tried in the past, I said, “yes, please!”
Now, let’s get to it…
The tube that MaxiLip comes in looks just like a tube of chapstick, just a simple white tube with black lettering. Nothing special there. But not a big deal either. Many top level skin care products tend to be very basic in their packaging.
I opened my tube and applied the product just as I would any other lip balm. And then I waited for the sting I had heard about. Waiting… waiting… and then about 45 seconds later, a mild sting began. Very mild, to the point of ‘if I wasn’t looking for it, I wouldn’t have noticed it’.
I waited a few minutes to allow the active ingredients in the product to take effect and then went to take a peak in the mirror. Lips looked a bit glossy and moisturized (they felt moisturized as well), and wait… was that just a bit more definition I was seeing on my top lip border?
I waited a few more minutes and went back for another look. Yes, that was definitely a bit more definition to my top lip border. And maybe a bit more fullness in both lips, just a bit though. I’m not sure I would call it 40% more fullness.
Now, I’m not going to lie… I really wanted the product to plump my lips up like a 2 syringe, $1000+ injection of Restalyne… but, alas… that was not the case, and that is not what the product is supposed to do or claims to do. But a girl can still dream, right? 😉
If you’re going to use a topical lip plumper, most of them do not deliver at all. This one will give you a slight plump.
It definitely gave me a more defined border along my top lip. And a more defined border creates a much prettier lip, even makes the lip look plumper.
There may be a cumulative effect after using this for a while. The active ingredients have been shown to increase collagen production as well as increase oxygen and blood flow, so maybe, over time, this could lead to some sort of more lasting effect.
If you’re looking to go from collagen depleted lips to super full bee-stung lips, this isn’t the product for you (Neither is any other topical product). Save your money for Restalyne injections if you wouldn’t be happy with a slight plump and a little definition.
The plumping effect doesn’t last a long time. Again, if you want longer-lasting plumpness, save your money for injections.
Wrapping it Up:
If you’re looking for a lip product that may give you just a bit of plumpness and most likely will give you a bit more definition to your lip line, then this may be a nice product for you. If you’re looking for real noticeable change like lip fillers provide, this (and no topical product that I know of) is going to be the product for that.
I’ve used it for a couple days now and I’m liking it more and more. I don’t see it as my solution to thinning lips. I’m still getting Restalyne injections here soon. But until then, I will continue using this product.
The Maxi Lip Lip Plumper by Vivant Skincare sells for $28.00 and you can find it at Amazon.
*I received a complimentary sample of this product for purposes of this review. My thoughts are 100% my own.
