This is part two of a two-part series.
At a conscious level, we recognize pleasure as something that makes us feel good, and pain as something that makes us feel bad… and part of our programming as human beings is to gravitate to that which makes us feel pleasure and away from that which makes us feel pain… but things works a bit differently at the subconscious level.
The subconscious mind does indeed have a pleasure/pain principle that it abides by, and it also gravitates towards that which brings pleasure and away from that which brings pain, however… pleasure to the subconscious mind are the things in our lives that are known, or familiar, while pain to the subconscious mind are the things in our lives that are unknown, or unfamiliar.
Now think about this for a moment… just because something is familiar, or a ‘known’, does not mean that it’s necessarily good for us, or that it’s necessarily a truly pleasurable experience for us at a conscious level. Likewise, just because something is unfamiliar, or an ‘unknown’, does not mean that it’s necessarily bad for us, or that it’s a truly painful experience at a conscious level.
But to our subconscious mind, this is the way things are set up, and this is why it is so very difficult to break bad habits and to form new ones. Our subconscious mind wants to stick with what it already knows… as this brings pleasure, and it will fight to avoid what it doesn’t know… as this brings pain.
Now… don’t be mad at your subconscious mind for this little bit of what may appear to be a design flaw. It isn’t a design flaw at all. Your subconscious mind wants nothing more then to provide you with everything you desire…
But as you can see, the subconscious mind follows patterns that it’s familiar with, and the only patterns your subconscious mind can be familiar with are the patterns it knows you’ve already come to experience many times over. To the subconscious mind, these things are obviously exactly what you want.
Your subconscious mind is always going to follow patterns. It can follow the patterns of your choosing… or is it can follow patterns created many years earlier via the default programming of your belief system.
If you’d like to learn more about your belief system and how to begin reprogramming your subconscious mind through reprogramming your beliefs, I’ve created a five-part series on your belief system which explains how your belief system was formed, what limiting beliefs are, how to discover what some of your limiting beliefs may be, and also some techniques to help you get started in clearing some of your limiting beliefs and creating new more empowering ones. You can begin with Beliefs – Part One: Your Belief System.
