Meditation is one of those things that, if you pay attention, you can see all of the ways it’s making your life easier and better. But, it’s also just as easy to take the contribution that meditation is making in your life for granted and come to believe that everything is smooth and easy just because it is.
That’s great… if it works out that way for you.
But, for me, while I find that life can truly be a pretty much smooth and easy road, I also find that there are some actions I have to take in order to keep it that way.
One of them is my meditation practice.
And I can vouch for this even more so right now because I just participated in a little not-on-purpose experiment that proved how true this is for me.
It all began in the week or so leading up to daylight savings time. We were a bit busier than usual and I began waking up and forgoing my normal morning meditation and visualization practice.
I normally spend 20 minutes each morning in meditation, followed by a few minutes of visualization and intention setting for my day.
Instead, I began jumping right out of bed, grabbing my cup of java, and getting busy with all I needed to get done.
Well, those busy days led up to daylight savings time, where we lost that hour, and also warmer temperatures out here in Southern California.
We like to take 5-7 mile walks in the mornings and, when it’s warmer, we wake up earlier to get our walk in before it heats up too much.
So, with the lost hour and waking up earlier to beat the heat, I continued forgoing my morning meditation and visualization time for the past two weeks that have led up to today.
And now, let me tell you what else has gone on over these past two weeks…
I have had many moments of feeling overwhelmed and out of touch with myself. I have also found that the more I got done, the more I needed to get done, and that there just haven’t been enough hours in the day.
And, all along, I’ve known that the reason I was feeling so overwhelmed and disconnected is because I wasn’t making my time for my morning meditation practice… I absolutely knew it!
So, you would think that the moment I realized that my feelings of overwhelm and disconnect were due to forgoing my practice I would start making that time again right away, right?
I mean, after all… I’m a certified meditation instructor and have taught others to meditate, led group meditation classes, written about the power and benefits of meditation, and experienced the benefits of meditation for myself for the past 5-6 years…
I know how important meditation is…
But no… oh no… I didn’t jump back in. I just kept doing what I was doing… and continued feeling overwhelmed and disconnected.
That’s one of the interesting things about us humans, isn’t it?
Often times, we know what needs to be done, yet, we get on this little hamster wheel and we just keep running…
Something either has to happen to snap us out of it (a catalyst) or we have to force ourselves to take some action to get ourselves off of the wheel.
So, this morning, I forced myself to restart my meditation practice as well as practice some nice visualization… and do you know… in an instant, I was right back to where I knew I could have been all along.
I feel at peace. I feel at ease. I still have plenty to do, but I know it will all get done.
This is the beauty of meditation. You don’t meditate for the 20 minute experience of the practice itself, you meditate for everything that meditation brings to you during those other 23 hours and 40 minutes that you’re not meditating.
This isn’t the first time I’ve gotten off track and it probably won’t be the last, but I’m here to remind myself and to share with you that I am worth the 20 minutes I spend each morning. You are worth it too.
Do you meditate? Are you interested in starting a meditation practice? I’ve written several posts about the process that can help you get off to a good start.
